I woke up this morning and my skimmer cup was approx 1/4 full with a thick red skimmate!?? Never seen red before in my life? I hope it’s not a problem! Any advice would be appreciated!

Cyano perhaps?

Better question would be why is there a sponge in your skimmer?
The sponge is from my CO2 scrubber.. it’s a recirculated system to prolong the life of the scrubbing media and the skimmate got a drop sucked up the line so I had to change out the sponge before the media gets wet

And the tank is very clean.. there is not cyano that I could see.. but perhaps your right

+1 for cyano. When I had a cyano outbreak and it died off my skimmate was coming out a nice red color, kind of like cherry kool aide mixed with iced tea. It also fluoresced a bit under blues. Does the skimmate coming out of yours do the same? If so, cyano.

That’s interesting, I did have a battle with cyano about 2 months ago. It’s since been eradicated, but perhaps there was some left that I couldn’t see? I will check to see if it fluorescence under lights. Thanks for the input!

Looks like you're not the only one
