I have a very big red slime problem. i got some red slime control from blue vet. Wondering if anyone else has used this and if so how did it work. i think it was a flow problem and i think i have that fixed. any feedback or suggestions would be awesome thanks

it is a bacteria that will eat the red slim. is it a sure cure, no not at all. will it clear it up for now, yes. is it truely safe? not in all cases, in some cases it can lower the O2 level too much and cause problems, like crash a tank but rare. i have seen it tank out a tank. once it lowers the O2 level, good bacteria already in your tank can die and cause a chain reacting from bacteria to corals to fish. most the time its fine.

why is it not a cure? if you have red slim it is caused by one of two reason. one, overfeeding or two not enough flow overall which is true in most cases.

i would have to ask.
what size tank?
what are you using for flow in you tank?
what kind of pumps and sizes?
how are you pointing them?

I have a reef ready 125 gallon.i have a koralia # 5 on one side and a # 4 on the other. they were at the top of the tank but i just moved them to the bottom. they are in the corners by my over flow boxes pointing toward the front of the tank on a slight angle. i really think this is a flow problem but i am not a pro at all of this. so i moved the power heads and then treated for it. i just heard a story thant someone used it and all of their fish died. i will be pretty upset if that happens. as far as coarl i have just about 10 polyps of zoas and 2 mushrooms

not sure 2 power heads is enough, and i am guessing, a 6 ft 125 first off. think your might want to try 4 power heads. i had 2 in my 75 and it wasnt enough took me 3 well placed power heads to do the trick. in my 125 i have a very nice close loop running from a reeflo dart.

one key to flow it to make the water turn in circular motion. be it front to back or side to side.

i dont think those are going to be powerful enough and i dont think there is enough of them. i would get larger ones or more of them. but even at that point might be better off with something like a couple vortechs or the some type of close loop, or a mix or a wave system.

i have seen red slim remover take out a tank, not mine but still. i have used it and i take it i have been lucky.

I've had good luck in the past with small doses of Erythromycin , easily found in fish meds, I started with half a tablet every couple hours till rapid die off started, siphoned off the dead stuff as it dies, once the tank was clear of all slime, I did 25% water changes twice a day for 3 days....no inverts were harmed or showed any real stress, and the slime never came back.

In order for red slime control to work you need to remove as much of the red slime as possible BEFORE you treat. Keep after it remove it when you see it. Switch your powerheads around do your water changes as per directions. Its not a quick cure but if you are dilligent you can whip it.

red slime is an indication of an excess nutrient problem, by removing the slime, and not the problem you open yourself up to an aiptasia, bristle worm, algae bloom problems, excess nutrients can cause a pest bloom or toxic water, a better approach is to eliminate the excess nutrients, ie; more skimming, water changes, cuc, and less feeding. All of these "pests" are beneficial in that they tell you that you have an issue before things start to die.

i have made some changes with power heads and it seems to not be spreading i have to do my 30% water change on monday and i will go from there thanks for all your help and suggestion this is a new tank so i battling all the beging problems thanu though for all your help it has helped me out a lot
