I have a red encrusting growth that is taking over my tank. Algae? Sponge? Something else?
it is spreading everywhere and needs to be scrapped with a stiff brush to remove. It creates a pinkish cloud when scrapped. It does not come off in pieces or chunks. It is chocking off a green stylo coral from the bottom up.
Tank is 5+ yrs old and has not had any fresh live rock added. Frags, snails, an urchin and chaeto have been only additions. The only small urchin I could find locally was a pencil. He doesn’t appear to be eating it.
Not sure how long it’s been around. Initially thought it was dark coralline, but I’ve never heard of coralline taking over and killing a coral.
I’ve posted on R2R, asked some of the top coral vendors and unfortunately haven’t found anyone who knows what this is or has dealt with it

thanks

I’ve never seen it. That’s pretty cool, but not if you don’t like it. How long did it tank to get to this point. :-)
