Red Tail Triggerfish

I have read that some people have had success with triggerfish in their reef tanks. In the distant future, it might be the not reef safe fish I risk putting in my reef cause allot of people say theirs is a model citizen. Do you have one in yours? What is your experiences?

I have read many reviews saying that red tails and blue throat triggers are model citizens. Compared to other triggers, like the undulate, which are really, really aggressive.

I have a pink tail in my reef. She is great with everything except shrimp. Does not bother anyone except those 10 peppermints i used to have.

Currently 150 gal mixed reef. But I used to have a 300 gal predator reef with lions, triggers, groupers, etc.

I bet you couldn't have any snails or shrimp in there.

No, just soft corals. That way even if somebody did decide to take a chunk, I wouldn't be losing much.

The tank started out as fish only, but I got bored with it.

The swelling is going down and her appetite is increasing. So, both good signs. I tried getting her out, but she goes & hides behind the rocks anytime I put my hand in the tank.

I converted my fowlr to a reef a few years ago and these dudes do just fine. I wouldn't trust them with shrimp though. They are curious about new stuff in the tank though, so there is a good chance I have to glue down my frags twice. I've owned the Picasso since early 2003.

What's the other one? Some triggers can be mean to other fish. They don't pick on snails? The red tail trigger and the blue maybe a little more tame. But each fish has its own personality.

Those are some teeth on that guy. Has any one of them try to bit you? I ask because I read a review on a undulate triggerfish and one person the fish bit them. The undulate is the meanest though.

They are surely mean compared to more docile fish. There is a bit of chasing when I get new fish, but it lets up after a day or two. However, the Picasso did kill a wrasse I introduced a few months ago. I just don't really add fish to my tank any more. The tank mates these guys have are two angels and two tangs and one clown. Everyone gets along pretty well. The blue-ish one is a Niger Trigger. Had him for seven years or so. He's a hand biter. It makes working in the tank pretty stressful, but I like a challenge[emoji3]

Yeah, he's entertaining. He's actually pretty docile towards the other fish unless they have food hanging out of their mouths. The Picasso is generally docile too. I've had the same crabs in my tank for many years. Never seen the triggers even bother them.
