Hi can someone please give me a name for this red algae. I have been vaccuming it out but i blink and its back.. I upped my whites for a bit and it really took off. I am into day 8 of Fluconazole to try to wipe it out and it seems to be slowing down and "shedding" alittle from the rocks... If I can identify it I might be able to stop it.. I have a chemiclean treatment planned for after the Fluconazole

Hard to actually see the plant structure. And definitely different than the turf algae I fought. Mine was like really thick but short GHA. Almost like the moss that grows in damp forests.

Do you have any grazers like tangs rabbit fish etc?
Not now but I will get rid of the blue chromies i have and get one. The algae grows in filaments initially then it fills in and mats out...it comes off pretty easy and I suck it into the return sock and do it for like an hour but it comes back pretty quick... Hopefully the fluconazole knocks it on the head

Oki update on the dreaded red "stuff" dosed Fluconazole on the 29th July and took the skimmer cup off, turned off the uv and removed the carbon. The small patch of GHA and Bryopsis have been nuked but the red stuff still going strong. It appears to have weakened it and some pieces have been coming off the rock work but not enough to claim a win. I dosed at a rate of slightly over the 20g per gallon and left it for an additional 4 days. I syphoned the rocks and scraped with a stainless straw into the filter sock and it appeared to come off easier however it is no way gone.
I reinstated the skimmer today and will let the Fluc run its course with just a steady removal via the skimmer.

Question, I plan on trying Chemiclean as it arrives in 5 days time do you think it will be ok dosing on top of the Fluc. Alternatively do you think I should run carbon for the 5 days before dosing chemiclean?

If this fail I will be setting up my new tank and let this one sit empty for a bit before restarting it...I am really sick of vacing the rock for this stuff only to have it come back the next day..

I dont think chemiclean will help, it is more affective on bacterium, like cyano. And its active ingredient is an antibiotic. A couple urchins could mow that down pretty quick too along with rabbit fish tangs etc. Hth

Try a few hermit crabs . Going the straight chemical route might cause more problems . What cuc have you got ??

I read they may not be reef safe..if so the rabbit may as well eat the sps before I kill em

He’s nice looking. It doesn’t mean much because every fish is different, but I have three rabbits. Two magnificent in my 210 and an orange spotted in my 110 (yes he’s moving soon to a different 210. I haven’t seen them pick at corals or bother them. Do be warned, their top fin is poisonous so use caution when working in the tank.

thanks for the heads up, I have read that they have venom equivalent to a stone fish. Ill run the risk as long as he eat the red stuff. BTW he is going into a 3' tank. If it works out to plan I should have either a 4 or 5" in a few months. see how it goes

Well surprise surprise. Day 23 of the Fluconazole treatment and there is some action. In the last 2 days alot of the red stuff has gone. I turned the skimmer on about 4 days ago but didnt do the recommended water change or add carbon. I thought I would leave it in and let the skimmer do its thing and slowly remove it. I have added another capsule to bump up the level in the tank to try to nuke it once and for all. Maybe the 20g dosage per gallon was under for this algae..
