Redsea 170 protein skimmer recommendations

I need help picking a protein skimmer for my Redsea 170 with sump. I have an Octo Classic 150sss but I think it might be too big and it is a bit loud. What do you think?

If the Reef Octopus classic is too loud (great skimmer BTW), then you may consider a skimmer with a DC pump or one of the Tunze DOC skimmers. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I have an aftermarket sump in my 170 and I’ll be going with tunze 9004 DC most likely...if I can find one. Very small footprint.

I use a Tunze 9004DC. I cut the bottom inch off because the stock sump depth would not accommodate the skimmer. With the mod, it works really well, as well as it did in my old tank. I checked with Roger before doing the mod. I am a noise nut and would pay stupid money for a quiet skimmer if I had to but I’ve been satisfied with the 9004.
I wish Royal Exlusiv made their mikro skimmer that was teased a few years ago...

How often do you have to empty the skimmate cup? That was my only concern was the small volume.

I clean it every 3 days when I swap my filter sock. I have left it for over a week when traveling or lazy. It’s about full in 7-10 days. You can change wet/dry skimmate with pump speed. I haven’t adjusted mine in a really long time. I pull a wet, tea colored skimmate.

I stuck with the 150sss. It was initially so loud I could feel the vibration in my brain but now that it is broken in...silence. My water is spotless and my wife’s over feeding has no impact except my constant cup cleaning. Couldn’t be happier
