Yea I was able to open it up all the way and it went away. Dumb. So gate valve it is. Now I just need to figure out what size that return pipe is for gate valve I can't get behind it to get a good enough grip to loosen it up to take that pipe out for measurements.
The down pipe is 40mm. The 1.5 inch gate valve should be ok with some solvent weld because 40mm=1.574 inches

Just for reference the emergency downpipe is 32mm

When I did my ‘cutting’ it was on a 4 year old living reef system so I had to be careful

You could test the size/fit before cutting by just unscrewing the downpipe (its a union connector) and seeing if it fits the new gate valve before your cut

I could use that down pipe if I was able to unscrew it the tank is too close to the wall to get a good grip unfortunately where it needs to be loosened .. lol

You didn’t read the instructions did you! Lol

Again, I have no clue why they even make it like that, it’s a stupid design on their flagship system.

Well considering this is the original s500 with the t5's and I bought it used there was definitely no instructions LOL

I'll play devils advocate. Why not take the time to adjust correctly? Everyone of us that own a red sea system (I have 2) have dealt with this battle. It is solvable without re engineering the plumbing. Just my 0.02

You can try to cut an inch off the bottom from inside the sump and bring that to hardware store.
It's down there under the water lol. I just ordered the 1.5 on amazon I'll stick it on the bottom of the pipe when it comes in see if it fits before I cut .. otherwise return it and get another. No rush. All though the wife hasn't heard the sound yet .. sure it's gonna be "god awful and needs to be fixed "

No matter where I turn this that air sucking sound coming from the wheel does not go away unless I open it all the way up. I've been fine-tuning it since yesterday and the sound does not change no matter where it's at unless the valve is all the way open leads me to believe it's another issue other than fine-tuning it

Fair enough. I would at a min call red sea and make some demands. We pay through the nose for their stuff, it should work.
