I have been eyeing a Redsea Reefer 750 XXL for a while now. Before I pull the trigger, I wanted to make sure it would work with the triton method, as I thought it would be interesting to try. I have been trying to make all my decisions based on tritons recommendations, the only problem is fuge size. Triton seems to recommend at least a 10% fuge size, larger if possible. The dimensions I would be working with:

Tank Volume: 160 gallons

Sump Volume: 40 gallons

The skimmer chamber is 28x20 inches with a max water height of 10.6 inches, making it ~25.7 gallons max. The skimmer chamber comes with a baffle to separate it into two so you can run a fuge area and a skimmer area. The baffle can either be placed at 5 or 8.75 inches. At the biggest setting the fuge area would then be 8.75x28 inches, only 11.2 gallons, far below 10%

So with that in mind I can only think of three options:

#1 – use the whole skimmer area as a fuge, giving me a 25.7 gallon fuge on a 200 gallon system. This would require me trying to figure out how to plumb an external skimmer, which I have never done and am a little hesitant to try.

#2 – Set the baffle at 8.75 inches and try and get by with only a 5.6% fuge, but from what I have read this is not a good idea?

#3 – ditch either the triton method, or the reefer and go a different direction.

So what do you guys think? Can a RSR 750 work with the triton method? If so, any input on the best way to do it? Any options I missed?

Thanks in advance for any guidance/input you have have.

Even if you have a lower than recommanded fuge you can still use the Triton Method. I’ve contacts BRS about the same problem i had with my sump and ultimately they said it’ll be fine as longn as i have a powerful fuge light such as the H380.
