on a hunch and a bit of advice I reduced white leds from 90% to 70% and reduced flow a little. Suddenly some frags are showing unexpected growth. Can this be connected?

Sure......too much of anything is just as bad as not enough. If you were baking your frags and hitting them with hurricane winds, it can irritate them to the point of stalled growth or death. Just have to find the sweet spot, which it sounds like you did

It’s likely that it could be due to this, what corals are they?

Over and over again, i learn that less is more.....

Too strong light and strong flow can stun coral grow, specially if its not supported with nutrients/feeding/dosing.....

All makes sense. I have forgotten the names of what I bought but the 2 montiporas (I think they were) have sprouted small branches.
