I am looking for a book that is more of an intermediate level that can really help me put a lot of things I'm learning on the internet together. I have The New Marine Aquarium, The New Reef Aquarium: Setup, Care, and Compatibility, and Set Up Your Own Saltwater Aquarium. Most of this information I had already found on the internet or learned within a few minutes of starting the book. I'm looking for a book that will provide a challenge and expand my knowledge, be up to date on live rock, sumps, refugiums, LED vs HO T5 w/ lunar, etc etc. Most of what I find on the internet is nothing but opinions, and I guess I'm looking for something a little more peer reviewed and solid. The Conscientious Marine Aquarist seems like quite a bit of money to pay for something that has become outdated, and most of the other books I have seen on Amazon come with few (20 or less) reviews that tend towards the negative side of things.
I guess since everybody puts these things on their questions: I have a 12 gallon nano cube that had been previously owned and established, I put just live rock in it, ran for a few weeks testing every day/every other day with no ammonia or nitrite spike, and nitrates hovering around 4. My pH and alkalinity have stayed lower than I would really like (pH 7.8, alk 7.5), but have not changed even a decimal point since I first started the tank (any advice on how to get that normal, or should I leave it alone?). I got a diatom bloom about a week ago that is starting to fade. I took a gamble and put a few coral in it yesterday. We'll see how that goes. I also have a newly set up 40 gallon breeder with a 20 long sump/refugium. I have an unknown amount of live rock (I got it for free from an established tank and didnt ask questions; its probably around forty pounds). I plumbed the tank myself, aside from the LFS drilling the back of the tank as per their suggestion. So far all the water I have put in the tank has stayed in the tank. I have a reef octopus hang on the back skimmer that I'm really kind of clueless on how to properly "tune" it. Nothing fancy has gone on with it, but its only about a week old. And I have a quarantine tank going. With two clownfish that I love very much and will go in my nano cube in a few weeks/month or so.
Well, I probably did this whole thread thing wrong, with all the questions that came up telling about my set up. Please dont be mean. I'm still learning, but I'm not an idiot. And nothing will turn me off these forum things faster than somebody being mean. I only say that because it seems rather common in threads from new people.
