Fact #83

If you use filter socks in your system, be sure to change them out regularly so that you don't create a nutrient trap. It will depend upon your system and how often you feed, but it should be generally every 2-4 days. There are also many suggested ways of cleaning them, so do what you think is the best way for yourself and your system!


Truth or False? What else might we need to learn on this subject? Please also share any pictures that may pertain to the subject.

I do mine in the sink with a little dish soap and then rinse them really well. Only have 2 and no washing machine so it's kind of a pain. I'm going to order 4 more so i can just do them once a month with my laundry.

We change ours out every 4 days. We knock the worst off of them outside w/a garden hose. Then run them thru the wash with a 1/4 cup of bleach. I'm paranoid about chlorine, so I also drop a dechlorinator tab in a bucket of ro/di water and soak them for about an hour (until I can no longer smell chlorine) and hang them to dry.

Well obviously by what everyone else says i apparently have not been cleaning mine enough. I change my socks about every 10-12 days I run mine through the washer once with a small amount of bleach about a cap full and then i run them through again with just water then I air dry them and right before i put them back into the system I swish them around a lot in a five gallon bucket of RO/DI water.

I used to used them only for a day or so after water changes, but haven't in a couple of years. I'd wash them all alone on the large load setting and with hot water. I was too paranoid to use bleach or detergent. I usually cycled them twice to make sure I wasn't introducing detergent residue to the system which I hear is high in phosphates.
