WOW, what a awesome article from Mr Paletta.
I just spoke to him yesterday about the some ZEO secrets and Triton but he never mention a word and had to find out myself.
Well, read and find out yourself, let me know what you think.

The Reefer?s Code formally explained by Mike Paletta

Read that earlier today. Great read!!!! I agree with a lot of his points, but like some I believe there are still many people who are willing to give/sell cheap frags just to spread the wealth and I've come across many who are more than willing to help out their fellow reefers.

Great read! Coming from a new hobbyist.

I for one, just want a successful ecosystem, and enjoy learning the hobby, from chemistry to becoming apart of the conservation.

I just try and follow the old school guys on these forums and literature they have written, as they paved the way for us and have successful Long term tanks.

Good advice and puts the history in perspective.

Thanks.

Great article with a lot of excellent points. There's nothing that gets under my skin more than people who see the price of a coral go up and frag their frag to make a quick buck. I see it over and over.

That’s a great article. I got a late start in this hobby (in my upper 40’s) and have only been at it for six months or so. I have always wondered if things operated differently before. I am enjoying learning the hobby from all aspects, from building the system, to the chemistry, to the life matter within. My goals are to be successful at keeping these beautiful creatures and actually have healthy fish and full blown colonies!

Recently I gave a rather pricy coral to someone because I wasn’t having much success with it and was fearful it wasn’t going to make. I was simply trying to find someone for the benefit of the coral. Two months later, I find it posted for sale and to be honest, it rubbed me the wrong way. I realize I gave it to them but I thought to myself, there should be some type of honor system or code, and it turns out there is…it just isn't followed anymore.

Thanks for sharing the article.

I believe this code is out there somewhere, but somehow lost along the way. Newest and greatest don't always make for best. Interesting to see how some of the older reefers out there are reminiscing about days gone by. Seems the hobby may have been harder in the past, but also more rewarding.

Great read, I will never get how a coral is all of a sudden x10000 times more just becuase someone slapped a name on it.

Yes, I saw that yesterday and it is great. Mike just put my thoughts I've had for a long time into print. Thanks Mike! I have been in the hobby myself since about 1990 and started keeping SPS when they first came into the US. It makes me very sad that people frag corals into pieces less than 1" and charge sometimes hundreds $ for them. I just joined R2R and will soon introduce myself.

I thought about this thread last night as I have as looking through old pics. When I started, just over 5 years ago, I took pics of everything I bought to keep a record. I saw some nice sps COLONIES that you can't find anymore. I know I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on them either. Probably no more then I am spending on frags now.

Great article things have changed a lot in the five years I been in this hobby,I'm happy that people helping out others is still there.

From an 'Old Salt' that pretty much got my feet wet at the beginning of the US Reefkeeping scene in the early 80's thought it was a great article and mirrors my personal take on the evolution of our hobby quite closely. It is a shame and seems that the "Pay it Forward" mentality is a rarity anymore yet was once the norm in the beginning or foundation to our hobby. I feel great pride in being able to help a fellow hobbyist starting out with my gained knowledge, Coral starts, unused equipment or anything that will further their success and then can only hope they to one day will Pay it Forward. I'm still pretty optimistic about the whole Reefkeeping culture and have met plenty of outstanding individuals over the past many years.

Cheers, Todd

Always good to hear from other "old salts".
