Welcome to R2R!

I think your post wins for most unusual newbie post!

Interesting concept, even more interesting how many people are head over heels about it. One one hand we want to preserve natural reefs and help the environment and on the other we're gung-ho about having to constantly throw away a product instead of doing 5 minutes worth of maintenance.

Tried them… useless…
regular socks last a day or 2, diapers ‘balloon out’ to more than double their size after a few days, but have collected very little ‘dirt’
1-2 days isn’t very long for regular socks from what I’ve read . I’m setting up my first tank that has a sump now with 4 holders and have been searching for direction. The reef diapers intrigue me because the negative reviews say they last about 3 days which is when BRS says you should change normal socks anyway. Total cost would be about $120/yr which beats roller mat options. So to be clear are you saying they last a shorter time than regular socks, or just that they don’t catch as much detritus? I suppose it’s a precarious balance. If the socks are too fine and catch too much they’ll get slammed for not lasting long enough. If they’re not fine enough they’ll last a lot longer but not catch as much and get slammed for that too. Sounds hard to win in that scenario.

Reef Diapers appears to be a small home based startup with 3D printed flanges (but no Red Sea flanges yet). So I’m supportive of the effort and willing to give them a try. Just trying to hone in on the specific criticism here. BTW they have a presence on R2R.

What size tank needs 4 socks?
My tank is 500g plus a 150g sump and the (only) sock needs to be changed every day or at max two, which is not a problem… I want to remove as much ‘dirt’ asap.
The diapers could last over a week because they filtered out basically nothing, and they ballooned out to a size that made them difficult to remove from the sock holder.

Nice tank size! This is 200g total and the stock sump is made with 4 socks, so that’s just what I have to work with. Actually Red Sea ships the tank with mesh filter socks so if you think the reef diapers don’t catch much just imagine what these do. 1-3 days is a big problem for us. 1) I often work 60 hours a week and 2) we often take work or other trips of 1-2 weeks. Can’t have someone coming by the house every day to maintenance the tank. I’d rather focus on dosing, refugium, algae scrubber, etc. than high maintenance mechanical filter socks. I see what you’re saying now about the ballooning (difficult to remove). Personally though if I go with socks I’d value ones that 1) last on the longer side and 2) are easy to replace with no cleaning involved. And they’ve got to be better than the mesh alternative at the very least…. I’m going to start with fleece cups for now though.
