reef disease and infants

My two kids now have never had any interest in the tank but my oldest who is 26 now I once found trying to drink a one gallon jug of skimmer ****. Don't know if it would have hurt him but thought that might be gross.
Biggest thing for me was 5 gallon buckets of mixing water I had going with no lids. He used to play in those and stick his head in them.
I had to lock the fish room door after that. It really scared me. Still gives me chills.

This was my anchor to the wall solution. This is in a 29g. So it's narrow and felt a little tippy even when walking by, you could tell by waves, but after being anchored it's so solid. And when the 3yo terror comes barreling though it doesn't move at all.

One on each side. Other side not pictured.

I always wondered why the warnings on the box of laundry detergent my mom got when I was a kid.

People talk about the ugly stage in their reef tanks. Wait till you see what a 2 year old can do to the back seat of your car.
That's why we only allowed them to drink from spill free cups and they were not allowed to eat in the car. Problem solved :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Yep, I marked and installed heavy duty drywall anchors. I didn't want that tank going anywhere. I also have my tall dresser anchored that has my Evo on it. Dressers can fall on kids when all the drawers are pulled at once, so smart to strap those down anyhow, but with the added weight of the tank I made sure it's also anchored.

I'll start making a list this weekend.

I'm pretty sure I've hurt myself on and in my tank more than my kids have.
Broken a lot of stuff too.
Pretty accident prone.
Maybe we should also start a thread for baby proofing tanks for adults.
I'd be the first in on that.

If you are suffering from "Reef Disease" seek help immediately for this serious condition. The good news is that it has not been shown to be infectous for children raised around tanks.

If you don't have life insurance already I recommend that you purchase a hefty policy for your family. All this worrying is likely to kill you early and they will really be grateful for the funds to hire a reef caretaker after you pass.

Well our baby just started crawling and now I’m second guessing if we should secure our 20G in the living room now o.0

Wife says it’s fine but I’m much more worried now for some reason! We will see how it goes she’s a fast learner so we’ll start her early and often around the tanks!

Securing it is low cost, high reward. My 10g is on a TV stand that isn't getting pulled over and the next smallest is 75, so I feel secure. Someone sciencey cam probably math how much force it would take to tip any of the tanks. But that's not me.

I mean, my aquarium room is already secured against toddlers, even though I'm hopelessly single. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I've always had cats, ones that like to nibble at that. So I don't want them poking around the aquarium room unsupervised. To that end I installed a baby gate just inside the room entrance and funnily enough, the cats respect the boundary, even though they are perfectly capable of physically jumping over it. :)

Yeah my 20G is on a stand smack dap in crawling area between living room and dining room. We have a 15g fw on tv stand in living room also. And a 13.5 going on a nightstand in daughters room in the future at some point (will secure before filling).

With the 20G we had the door open to the stand and pulled on it like a little one wild for standing themselves up. It took quite a bit of force and we don’t think she’ll be able to do it now but as she grows it’s a possibility and we are planning to teach her not to used the tank to stand and we will secure it also!

it is true, we do need more frags. but for some reason the budget is tight...

Thank you, he's a good one. there was a time (basically his first three months alive) the only thing that calmed him for sure was the reef.
