Reef-Labs ICP results, what now?

So at Aquashella Orlando I picked up a Reef-Labs icp test. They were BOGO. I just got back the results and I just feel like the tank I’m looking at should be way worse, my tank looks great by the way. Also, how does lead end up in my tank. We are in a 5 year old home with pvc plumbing and have City of Orlando water from OUC.

I use Aquaforest reef salt and ESV 2-part. I would never just make random changes to my tank especially when it looks as great as it does.

The Reef-Labs website interface is great. The tracking of my water is great too. As it moved through the postal system, I knew where it was every step of the way. It took an additional 2 days to be forwarded from Bradenton to Tampa as the company moved.

Check the magnets on the frag racks? Only thing I can come up with.

That looks like a pretty good report to me. Even the blues like Sulfur look perfectly fine. Good job. Don't sweat it.

Tank is 40 gallons with an actual water volume of 31.5 gallons. I change 5 gallons every 2 weeks. This water sample was taken after a water change.

Check the magnets on the frag racks? Only thing I can come up with.

I inspect the magnets every so often when I clean the racks. No issue that I’ve noticed. Oceanbox Designs makes great racks.

@Randy Holmes-Farley what could potential sources of lead be in the aquarium? Is .008mg/l dangerous? Help me understand. Please.

One cannot know the accuracy of any of these values, but if it were me I'd raise the salinity, and possibly consider a trace element supplement. Elevated lead is unusual and, IMO, may be test error.

Lead at 8 ppb is barely above the target level of <4.4 ppb in Australia and I would not worry about it if the tank seems OK and there's no apparent exposed metal. All of the tox results shown below happen at higher levels than you report.

Thank you for the advice. My tank is at 1.025 as measured with my high precision hydrometer. I’m not sure why it came back as low as it did. I will do my research into trace element supplements. If there was metal leaching lead, would there be any other metals that should show as elevated as well? Thank you for the article, I will take a look.

Had them same issue, 5 year old stable system.
ICP Test indicated low salinity @32.5ppt, but my calibrated refractometer has always tested @34ppt.
ICP Test indicated .9 in iodine, this would be way high, my test shows 0.06ppm.
ICP Test shows 9 times the amount of aluminum.

ICP is nice information to have but I’m not stressing over it.

My favorite is chlorine @ 22620ppm.
That value I just don’t get, it should have easily killed everything.
I would expect that result from my pool.

Chloride is the main ion in seawater. That's what it is, not chlorine as Cl2.

Agreed, but the test result clearly labels it as Chlorine.
Not sure how great these tests actually are, but it was fun.

The lead in the water thats showing on the test should be removed by an rodi system, but with that being said you are still well under the allowed limit per the dep. They allow 15 micrograms per liter which breaks down to 0.015mg/l. And I understand that you live in a 5 year old house plumbed in pvc but at the end of the day, somewhere in the distribution system there are probably fittings, Corp stop, curb stops and valves that were installed well before the lead free standards were implemented. So lead is going to be leaching in to the water through those. Because at the end of the day (unless someone is using a well) your water travels a long distance to get to you and lord only knows how many parts and pieces it touches that contain lead.

Yeah, I use an AquaFX RODI all the filters have been replaced recently. I will send out an icp of my tap and RODI.

Honestly I would contact OUC first and tell them that you had a test sent off and that it had lead in it a see if they would come out and take a sample and test it. It shouldn't cost you anything and I can't imagine that they wouldn't have a lab to test it. I work for the City of Edgewater over by NSB and if we have a lab in our little town I would figure so would orlando. Lol.

But that's just my thought. Rather than wasting the icp test. Because in reality if there is elevated lead levels in the water then they should technically get out there and flush that line and try to get the levels down and keep them down.
