Is there a sticky thread anywhere on reef lighting and lighting products? Ive had a search and cant find one.

Im looking for a discussion of the best current models of lighting and different peoples views on each

I'm not sure there is a single thread like that. Besides, there is no one single best way to go for light. MH, t5 and leds all work and have different advantages and disadvantages. And like almost everything in this hobby, if you ask 10 different people a question, you'll get 15 different opinions. There is no best.

Over the 15+ years I've been in the hobby I've had as many as 4 tanks running at one time (I'm down to 2 and will be building a new tank to get down to just one). So I've used MH for years, t5 at the start and during some of the MH years. I worked for a couple of years with a supplier of aquarium led fixtures and that's what I use now.

All 3 types work perfectly well for most aquariums, there is no overall best. Only best for this or best for that. What you need to do is figure out what is important to you and what will work best with your tank and corals.

What is your budget?
Is heat in your house an issue? Will hot lights force you to need a chiller?
Does your coral require very high PAR (like high end sps corals)?
Is your tank best suited for a specific shape of light? (point source lights, big arrays, multiple fixtures)
How will you mount the light?
Do you want sunrise/sunset control (cool as a play thing but totally useless to your coral and fish)?
Do you want quick spectrum control? MH and t5 require you to change bulbs to change the spectrum of the light, leds can change at the touch of a button. Is that important to you and why?

And there are other questions as well. I ended up will all leds for 3 basic reasons: 1) They run very cool and I live in SW Florida where I have to run AC for 6 to 8 months of the year. 2) I enjoy the sunrise/sunset change throughout the day. But if you are at work 8 hours or more, is that change worth the cost? BTW, I'm retired so I am home a lot. 3) I love being able to change the spectrum of my light, both over the course of the day and as a 'show off the tank' feature when other people visit. My tank is set up for corals that fluoresce well and I want maximum blue spectrum in the evening. But durring the day I want my corals to get a more full spectrum for their health and normal pigment creation.

I hope that helps some? Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer.
