New 90gal has been up and running for 2 months. Six weeks ago I purchased a Reef Oct 150-s. Received it gave it a nice vinegar bath and fired it up. Since then it has been and endless amount tuning. I had to adjust the air input in all kinds imaginative ways as well as the gate valve. Sometimes it would not skim at all or overflow or put out watery skimate that looked almost clean enough to drink.

Last night I pulled out a 15 year old ASM-G3 from storage put it in the sump and plugged it in. Boom! it began to skim within 10 minutes and in the last 24 hours has pulled out almost 2 quarts of CRUD and totally shut down the Reef Octopus!

Now what? Did I throw $300 bucks out the window? Should I wait another 6 weeks for it to "break in" while my tank inhabitants suffer? For sure the ASM-G3 is not as sexy as the 150s, but it is kicking the 150s' BUTT! Any thoughts or suggestions?

My thought is that the ASM always have been and always will be great performing skimmers. I run an ASM mini G with the Sicce pump on my 50 cube and it blew the SCA-301 that was included with my PnP setup away. Like you said, it was also pulling gunk out within minutes of being fired up. I would explore return options for the RO skimmer. If returning is absolutely not an option, try to re-sell as like new for a little less than what you paid.
