Reef octopus 2000 int help

I recently bought a Reef Octopus 2000 int. I finally got it tuned good but the water is flashing out of the gate valve into the sump. I was told to fix this I would need a 90-degree elbow. I've been to the hardware store to Times now and none of the fittings I'm trying to fit work, I have tried one and a half inch and 1 inch and a quarter and neither one work. I even tried dremali down the 1.25 in. Does anyone know the size for this gate valve?

They use metric fittings and the skimmer should have came with an adapter. Regular pvc will not fit as you found.

The output is 40mm and comes with a 1.25” adapter.
