Reef Octopus BH-1000 noise level

I bought a used BH-1000 HOB skimmer and for 3 months it has been working perfectly - very little noise, removing lots of junk from the water, etc. Just recently it started making a loud gurgling sound that comes from the air hose. If I cover the hose with my finger it stops, but starts right back up when I release it. It's very loud even with the silencer on it. I've tried cleaning the whole unit and it didn't help. Has anyone else experienced this? It still seems to be working fine, just so loud.
