I have had this skimmer for a few months now and I am unable to run the pump over 2/5 power setting without overflowing the skimmer with the drain fully open, or just plain removed altogether. The water level is right in the sweet spot, just over 8 inches. This skimmer has the new Varios-6 skimmer pump on it. I have cleaned it a few times, and there has been no change in performance since I installed it.

Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?

How deep is the water its in in inches? Do you have the gate valve open all the way? Make sure the airline isnt plugged and its the correct size.

8.25 inches of water. The gate valve is a notched pipe, but it is all the way open. I have even removed it altogether, no change. The airline is clean, and fits nicely on both fittings, at th volume and at the air silencer. Must be the correct size.

Do you know how to measure the current when it's plugged in? Then you can see if its faulty. Check for burs or plastic bits innthe intake.

I need to update this thread. I figured out the issue. I was feeding so much food with free lipids that the skimmer was pulling too much water when it began to skim after feedings. I added a powerful mechanical filter to decrease the lipids in the water, and deceased feeding amounts. Totally solved this problem.

Interesting.

Please describe your powerful mechanical filter.

It’s an eheim 1262 with a long pvc pipe intake strainer. I cover that intake with filter material, in my case blanket batting. The output happens to go to a UV sterilizer, but could just as easily just act as a powerhead.

I used this as inspiration.
