Hi All need some advice. I am inventorying my current equipment that I have from a tank tear down as I am going to start a new build in 2020. I will be starting a new 120 which will ultimately be stocked on the heavy side. So I have two skimmers. A Reef Octopus 150SSS DC Skimmer which according to the coralvue it is rated for 100g heavy, 150g medium and a 200 light stocking. I also have NYOS 220 Skimmer which the manufacturer says its good for 125 - 500g tank. I like both skimmer but I am not sure which to use.

I need your help. Which would you use Octopus or NYOS?

I don’t have direct experience with either, but I’ve read more bad reviews of Nyos than Octo skimmers and I went with an SRO skimmer for my new build.

Which uses the better pump? Thats really what it comes down to imo.

Unsure about your price range but I love my lifereef skimmer. Can use any pump and basically the same design for over 20 years.. I use it with a reef octopus varios 6

Thats actually a good choice becaise you can use any pump.

I've been using the Nyos 160 on my 120 gallon for +3 years and love it. No issues at all except when I dropped the skimmer cup. Custom service is through Ecotech and they got me a new one for free. I love their support. I did have a Reef Octopus classic 150 before and had nothing but problems with it. Their customer service didn't want to help when I had a problem 4 months in and just wanted to sell me another one at full price. Just my experience with both manufacturers but you will find good and bad stories about both.

My Nyos 160 works well. As most reviews indicated it is very level sensitive. Unfortunately for it, I have a roller filter that results in about 1/4” of level changes in the skimmer chamber. This small change can have a pretty solid effect on the skimmer.

A skimmer stand will fix that

After having two pumps stop working on two different skimmers id get a lifereef so you can use any pump imo. One was a reef octopus and the other a sca302

I have the Reef Octopus Classic 150 int. 6" Internal Skimmer. The reviews during my research were awesome for this particular skimmer. The new price for this is $240.00, but I’ve seen them used here On R2R as low as $100. It is rated for tanks up to 150 gallons. I chose it over the other Reef Octo Skimmers because it is Super Quiet, very easy to tune in with really no break in period, has a high performance Venturi system and gate valve for controllability. Now the Reef Octopus Space Saver series was, in fact, on my short list too. However, I ultimately decided against it as many reefers complained it I s mad difficult to clean with the pump housed inside the unit. I’m very happy with my skimmer choice and it has worked flawlessly! Another point: the skimmers are built to last. The only replacement you may need over the years is the pump, which is still readily available for the Classic 150 int. Model.
