Attempting to decide on the appropriate return pump size has been difficult for me despite my futile attempts at research. I have a 150 gal tank with dual 3/4 inch returns and dual 1 inch drains. I am torn between the varios 6 or the varios 8 for my return pump. The stand I just finished welding stands 34 inches tall with an additional ~24 inches to where the returns will be positioned and minor horizontal deviations. My question is while using a 40 gal breeder for a sump would the varios 6 be sufficient or would I be better off spending the extra money for the larger model?

I'd spend a little more just to have the overhead. It's nice not to run the pump at full power all the time - it will last longer.

I agree. I have the 6 on my 90 gallon (115 gallon total volume) and have it running at about 50%. I cannot hear it, even when everything else in the tank is off and I put my head next to it. The only way I know it's on, is because water is still moving through the overflow.

Agreed on going with the bigger. I went with the 6 on my Reefer 250 for that specific reason.

BTW, great choice. I love my Varios!

I would say go larger also. I have 4 varios 6’s on a system. Super quiet. I am planning a 180. I am going for the 8 also.

Thanks for the replies. Going larger was my initial feeling however I was unsure if it was overkill given my return line and drain size.

LennyD, I have the Varios 6 coming in and see that the output is 1.25". I am drilled for 1 inch return pvc.

Based on whats included, what do I need to buy to go from the Varios 6 outlet, to silicone hose, then to 1" pvc?

You would need 1 1/4 to 1 reducer to 1” hose barb and another 1” hose bard and 1” pvc coupler. I do not remember but the pump may come with a reduced to 1” pvc.

Is the 1.25" union threaded or slip? So, it would go varios 6 > 1.25 union > 1.25 to 1 inch reducer bushing > 1"hose barb > silicone tubing > 1" hose barb >1 inch pvc

Does that sound right? Thanks alot, it lets me goto Lowes before it comes in so I can work on it during Thanksgiving.
