reef-pi :: An opensource reef tank controller based on Raspberry Pi.

@Ranjib for the power controller, what wire did you use to go from the buck converter to the pi-hat? Did you strip, and tip some normal wire with female jumper tips, or did you use some long jumper I failed to order?
I use female female jumper wires to connect them. I solder male header pins on both pi hat and lm2596 module for connections
 
Was there a reason you used two separate units for the doser and the power/ATO/temp unit?
Doser module was built after the power controller.
I personally don’t see a lot of benefits clubbing all the modules together , particularly if they are not related (I.e. I don’t need to control them together , or have some feedback etc )
There is also a challenge of making a more complicated power supply unit for such setup . But I do expect to combine them in future

It’s exactly what you are thinking, I use jumper wire and tin their ends
 
@Joseph Lim I just pushed an experimental deployment to heroku at http://reef-pi.herokuapp.com that you can take a look at. In fact, it's open to everyone, so be careful not to enter any sensitive information. It's using default credentials of reef-pi/reef-pi. reef-pi isn't designed for multiple concurrent users, so it will be interesting to see if there are any weird side-effects. I'll probably also try to get it to reset on a regular basis.
I haven't used heroku before, so there may be unexpected problems, but it seems to work so far.

@Michael Lane i just tried the website you mentioned. Everything is blank. Is it ok to add some stuff and try to familiarize myself with the UI of the software. I wont be chnaging anything in the configuration section.

Yep. Go ahead and try whatever you like. Feel free to add connectors and stuff to the configuration.
I'll probably get it to reset itself every couple of days anyway.
 
@ranjib I'm still waiting on the 12v power plug to come in from amazon, so i haven't powered it on to test quite yet. I have to tin together some jumpers to give the buck converter some space as well. No bad though. The mount for the chip had 10 pairs instead of 9 pairs, but worst case is i solder directly to those if i need them.

That should be fine. It’s hard to get ic socket with exactly 18pins. I had bought a pack of ic sockets that I am using for past three years

Figured as much. I ordered what was linked on the adafruit site, and I've made a living off of improvising, so this is no big deal at all. I've been posting my progress on the build as a whole on here and FB, and people are taking interest in the reef-pi.

Any value in salinity monitoring? Would this work?

We have debated salinity (also called as EC or electrical conductivity), ORP and DO probes multiple times here. And I have punt on their support till now, they may come next in 3.0 (if theres enough excitement for this from the users) or later. Following are some details:
- In terms of reef keeping chores, these are not as important as temperature or even ph. With ATO , salinity should be same unless its being impacted by water change. ORP on the other hand has very little practical use, other than validating some already known case that can be detectable by other means.
- These are costly probes required thorough calibration and still can give anomolous reading if users are not setting up them correctly.
- It will not be a lot of work to support this in reef-pi since they are same as pH probe (we'll lean on atlas scientific/tentacle shields), but unless we have users we can't ensure proper field testing.

A quick question. And please excuse me if this isn't the best place to post it given that this thread is supposed to be for the development of Reef-Pi.

How do people set up automated water changes using Reef-Pi. That's my next project I'd like to set up. I've got a few ideas, but they become quite complicated quite quickly. I'm wondering if there is a simple method I'm overlooking
