That's awesome. I was hoping this was the case.
I can't wait to get some lights to test this out. I have the PCA9685 board that I just connected, so I may have to rig up a 5mm led in the mean time.
What light you plan to use for your reef tank? Was it you or Brad , using black box?

Brad has his black box already.
I am looking at sB Reef Lights, though I am not sure whether I am going to go with 1x 32" or 2x 16". With reef-pi I dont have to worry about upgrading the lights past the basic versions though, this will do everything!
Thanks again for all of your work.

Ryan, I plan to buy one 16 basic as well. I am not quite there yet, though. I have to build my power box and finish my temperature sensor - waiting on the sensor. I found a really cheap API 550 without the battery like @aaron used and I need to figure out the wiring.

Temp sensor is first though.

I just published the first working draft for light controller (essentially a kessil controller) on reef-pi website: https://reef-pi.github.io/build-guides/lighting/

I could use some help with proof reading, my english is pretty bad, and I am fairly sure there are plenty of typo/spelling/grammartical errors. Other than that, if you think anything obvious is missing, do let me know,. i'll add them
Is transistor base connected to ground on pca board ?

Pca9685 , guarded via a 10k resistor. Collector is connected to 12 volt , guarded via a 1k resistor, emitter is connected to ground. Output is from collector

Couple of updates on the software side:
  • Reef-pi now will ask for confirmation for all delete operations (equipment, light , outlets, jacks etc ) and administrative action (reboot , power off etc )
  • Reef-pi can now upload images taken by pi camera to Google drive using command line application called 'drive'. I am testing it right now, will publish the setup instruction (setup requires some command line work) once I'm done

Happy reefing

Here is what I'm doing to house the relays and PWM.

This is a pirated UPS with the electronics and battery gutted.

Battery access cover allows access to relay module

Cat5e port for PWM to lighting

Aaron, Did you use 12 gauge or 14 gauge wire for this? How did you mount the PWM and relay boards?
I found one of these and am trying to recreate what you did, by using the pictures.

In your diagram the base of the transistor is connected to ground on the Pca9685 board and ground is also connected to the emitter from pi ????

Oops. Let me correct that :-O
Thanks for catching that, it should be connected to the pwm

your welcome Ranjib
my components should be arriving tomorrow now the fun begins
I have updated the docs & website. Temperature , ato and camera controller build guides got some content update as well. These are still work in progress , I’ll let you all know once they are done

We (me and my family ) are on outle way for vacation To Hawaii. This was the reason to get the camera controller back again in reef pi. This was the very first thing that was added in reef-pi (then named reefer ) more than a year before. The camera controller lets me take photos of my tanks at periodic intervals (I have configured it at 1 hour ). The images are not of great quality (I have not done any tuning yet) , but they do serve the primary purpose , I.e peace of mind :) . I know thing are alright
Here’s a sample photo

Note, there’s a lot of things we can tune to make the image better, I have done nothing on that front yet, this is something for post 1.0 ...

Enjoy that time with your family.

have a great time in hawaii, if you bring enough yellow tang back, might pay for your trip ;)

I think imma sell the black boxes i got and maybe do the kessils. Is anyone interested in them?
Why? Not happy with the light itself ? Or due to control issues ?
