Is there any science behind why a micro-frag grows quicker than say a normal frag? Does it base out quicker because it's smaller and has to take up more nutrients?

I mean @bubbaque gets great growth from what are essentially nubs in his tank, yet some of the frags of a few branches in mine seem to stall and barely grow
