Hi! I pulled out tons of old reef rock but I'm unsure of these 2 pieces, keep in mind i bought these roughly 15 years ago, but I'm not sure.

They seem a bit solid, heavy. Please chime in.

Given the growth forms I see, I’m leaning real and not man made. That said, I can’t recall too many real life rock pieces being very dense, the densest rock I recall was Tongan but I typically only saw Branch and not really a base rock. It could be of aquacultured rock though as that’s generally quite dense as well.

Much appreciated it, Im just stuck. I kina want only real reef rock in this build, I think I have just enough to fill my 42 gallon display.

I have a smaller piece i can crack in half do you think a fresh side will assist in what you think?

Honestly without knowing the true origin, it would really be anyone’s guess. My best guess, after researching further, is it’s likely Fiji base rock. Often used as the foundation of our aquascape (then putting the more decorative pieces on top of it.

I honestly don’t believe it to be man made, as most that I can recall never used coral skeletons (shells and crushed coral sure but not skeletons like what I’m seeing on the rock).

Does it float? Do you have to tie it to something heavy that sinks to the bottom? Does stuff grown on it?

It's been roughly 10 years since ive last had it in water, It does sink. I remember buying tons of rock back when man made wasn't a thing, I don't remember where an when I got it just a rough estimate of how long ago.
