Reef Salt High Mag

I recently had two 171 gallon boxes of Reef Salt and getting similar results. Both boxes over 1600 mag. Tested with Aquaforest Magnesium test kit and Red Sea pro Magnesium test numerous times. I also contacted Aquaforest and they told me it was probably my home test kit. I'm not buying it. To many people are reporting this issue. I also switched to Red Sea Blue bucket and am getting Normal Magnesium readings. It's a shame as I'm running the full Aquaforst method and I would prefer to use their salt.

Check or osmose shows tds 0.00. Then the residue will remain in your container. For example mg. Therefore, the tests show high level of mg. This is a high concentration reef salt that has more mg. See when the salt is produced. This problem was due to the old salt production.

I also use AF salt and yes my parameters are always close to 1500. Just got back an ATI test that confirmed my tests are correct. However, for me I don’t mind the high Mag, not an issue. I like the salt enough not to worry about it.

I dont understand what you are trying to say.

I stopped using the salt a year ago because of this. No one keeps the salt in stock anyways, because of the same reason. I still love and use other af products. But I had to switch to the blue buckets, even though i dont really change water anymore.

Just got 1500 mag when I tested. I did a 40 gallon water change and a 10 gallon water change both times came out to 1500 mag.

This is somewhat confusing because it seems to me that doing weekly water changes like a lot of us do, would only raise the mag content in our tanks. This could be because our tanks are not utilizing the mag as rapidly as we are replacing it, causing a build up over time. I use Fritz RPM(blue box) and it says it mixes to a concentration of 1300-1400. I do weekly water changes of 5 gallons in a 25 gallon tank and my mag was >1500 using a Salifert test kit. I waited 3 days, tested again, and it was 1485. I truly believe we are diluting our systems. Try testing it at the end of the week before your water change.

I test the freshly mixed saltwater before I do a water change and am getting 1500 mag.

I'm doin a water change today so I'll test mag and see what I get just started using af and this is the first bad thing I've heard about af

On the bright side at least you guys wont have bryp. issues lol :) (sorry to crack a joke)

i have tested MG in the the 1600 range also using red sea titration test. using probiotic salt mixed at 35ppt.

as also mentioned by someone else earlier, i have not observed any decline in coral or fish health.

I'm having the same problem here with my AF Reef Salt.
My Mg is 1800 in the tank, I've tested a freshly mixed saltwater before I do a water change and I'm getting 1580 at 1024sg /32ppt (using a hanna salinity test just calibrated).

Thought it was just me, but I've been on reef salt and component 123+ going on a year now and my Mg in the tank is untestable with a salifert kit since it's over 1500.

I just mixed some fresh component 123+ and intentionally omitted the Mg to try and get the tank to come down to something that at least reads on my test.

This may be a dumb question but is higher Mg a problem? Won't it get used up and drop?

I have a new box of AF salt sitting next to me that I haven't used or tested yet.

Mine always runs near 1600 ppm, which I put down to the fact I run 35-36 ppt not 33 so use more salt than the Aquaforest standard mix. My tank is doing just fine (2.5 YO) and all the reading I have done suggests high Mg at this level is not an issue.

I've been mixing up buckets of my new batch and it's testing 1380 fwiw. That's at 1.026 calibrated. I wouldn't worry if it was higher.

I got high mag, low calcium, low salinity from AF reef salt. Red sea pro salt was spot on. Now I have to add extra components to get to the recommended levels. Red sea pro salt is more cost effective.

New to Aquaforest Reef Salt (Ex Red Sea Blue). Brand new 25kg box, 35ppt mix testing 1500+ with salifert kit(can't test further as 0 on needle is 1500) which likely means it's a bit beyond 1500 as the test solution had yet to change colour.

I think it's safe to say this is an issue as many different people reporting it. Considering options on if these high levels of mag have any adverse effect or if I need to move back to RS Blue bucket

Old thread, but today AF's mag is still 1600.
Oh yea. Just did Mg test today, cause snail was acting weird and for sure tank level was just shy of 1500 and new batch of water was over Saliferts limits. Dont even make me start about the KH difference from bucket to bucket. I guess its time to change salt :(
