Reef Spotlight - June 2012 - "Darryl_V"

Thanks for the positive comments everyone !
Awesome system and very well deserved; congrats! Corals and overall layout are top notch. I subscribe to a lot of the same methodology that you do.
I was bit confused by this:
* Temp: UNK
* pH: UNK
* Specific gravity: UNK
What does UNK mean? Only thing I can come up with is unknown?
I forgot to give Scott that information. pH is actually unknown because I dont test for it ever but Temp can fluctuate from 77 to 80 in the summer and 77-78 in the winter. SG is 1.024-1.025....standard stuff.

Nice looking tank! Your SPS are some of the best I have ever seen!
What is the red chalice with the orange rim?
Congrats on the much deserved Spotlight!
Thanks...that chalice was a wild import...it was sold to me as the flamethrower (wild version) by ReefRaft here in toronto. Now that I follow chalices a bit more I realize it doesnt really look like the flamethrower at all.....still a nice piece though and doing surprisingly well for me considering its wild.

Beautiful tank! I love all the different colors.

So do you ever frag your corals or do you just let them continue to grow out?
I really like the grown in look and Im looking for more growth on a lot of pieces....with that said though I still have to trim to get the shape I want and when they start to grow into each other. So the answer is yes but the catch is Im in Canada so no shipping corals over the border. Sorry guys.

Beautiful tank! You Canadians have all the nice tanks!
Ha.....I highly doubt that's true. We have a very lacking community here IMO. No trade shows, swaps, no great forum for eastern Canadians and not as many people captive culturing corals. In fact absolutely no one captive cultures nice chalices here.....which is a pity IMO as the captive grown strains seem to be more hardy.
Wow awesome how did I miss this.
I dont know but welcome aboard.

Quick question if you don't mind. On the WM ultimate snow, do you just dose it per the bottle when you create your snowstorm with the turkey baster? is it acting as a binding agent for detritus so the skimmer can function better?

Yes I dose it when I'm stiring the top portion of sand and blowing the rocks off. Not sure exactly how it works....but it has seemed to work against cyano in the past.

Amazing Colors....What's your secret?
Franks red hot.......I put that **** on everything.

Seriously though...no secret. KISS theory. Experience, patience, careful observation etc.

Awesome tank man! I liked all the pictures of the SPS corals you have, very colorful. I hope my tank looks like that one day.

Hello Darryl,

Congrats on being the reef tank spotlight for June 2012!!!!!

Yours is one of two tanks that I keep track of in the forums (the other being "the reef in the sky" located in Hong Kong).

Were all your SPS colonies grown from frags?

Congrats on a very deserved spotlight.
Love the colors and how healthy your corals look.
