REEF TANK HAZY and CLOUDY *See Pics*

Hi, I have been doing the same water changes for the past year with no issues. I use Fritz Pro and it mixes clear all the time along with parameters. I did a water test and all parameters are good except for 500+ Calcium. I manually dose ESV Alk every day 10ml to keep my Alk at 9. But stupid me I added 10ml of ESV Calcium and when I got home from Disney the tank was cloudy I performed a water test and did a 5G WC on a 60G system. Calcium is still high. Not sure if it’s the snowflake effect from adding the Calcium I have never added Calcium in the past. I added the Alk and then 30minutes later added the Calcium. Any help would be appreciated and Merry Christmas to all.

I would not be convinced it is calcium carbonate. Adding calcium does not normally cause any precipitate.

A bacterial bloom is more llkely.

Are you doing any organic carbon? If not, it may go away on its own.

Do you skim?

Not dosing any organic carbon I do add some Aquavitro Fuel every water change as a light dose. Yes I do run a Skimmer it’s not really going nuts just pulling skimmate as normal

I'd stop the fuel for a bit.

Since I added the calcium yesterday morning, but just got my calcium tested via Salifert and it’s 380

OK, so I'd hold off on the fuel and let it go a few days before doing anything more drastic (like mechanical filtering or a UV).

Could even have been something spawning. I had that happen a few times.

I do have Trochus Snails and Stomatella Snails also probably bristle worms maybe. First time this has happened to me. All live stock and coral seem to be doing ok. Since I could rule out high levels of Calcium what would cause a bacterial bloom? My LFS said when he mixed a batch of Fritz Pro it also was cloudy not sure if it was a bad a batch or some sort of chemical reaction? As of now it does seem like it’s clearing up a little.

Need help after 6 weeks of qt the fish I put in were all fine until 3 days after puo them in now both my triggers have ick or velvet either way I decided to go with the copper in the tank although they eat I c it getting to them more and morw

yes I’m following his suggestions, why do these bacterial blooms happen? What are the pros and cons?

I’ll never be an expert so my 2cents.
Bacteria are good so they eliminate the waste, N2, NO2 and NH3. (Look for Nitrogen cycle)
The cons are NO3 rise (bad for some corals) and bacteria “corps” when they die (pollute the water).
I would also tunne the skimmer to more wet skimming and in my case I turn my ozone generator on for some days.

I just went through something similar and I believe it was from chemical warfare. My leather and gorg shed and all of a sudden my tank was cloudy. I bought chemi pure elite ( I run purigen already) and it cleared up overnight.

Here is a updated pic of my tank, the skimmer is pulling out good skimmate and water is starting to clear up. I will add some carbon to my sump in a bag and see if that helps.

UPDATE: Tank has cleared up nicely and almost back to full clarity. The activated carbon helped a lot. Still not sure what the cause was. Was thinking a bad salt mix, bacteria bloom, chemical warfare, spawning event etc

Sometimes we just never know what happened.

Going through same event presently, with one caveat, I cleaned my sump,and when finished and turned my back on, pumps running, etc...my display turned cloudy. I use fritz pro, parameters were spot on before the sump clean. I’m more than convinced it’s bacteria. I do run biopearls...reactor running,and carbon addedinsump. Any suggestions? Should I turn off bio pearls?skimmer is running but not going nuts on skimmate.
