Here's some specs: It's a 60 gallon cube with a 10ish gallon sump/refugium running 10 pounds of miracle mud. I have three types of macros in there lit by an LED light. Chaeto, caulerpa taxifolia, and caulerpa prolifera. None of them seem to have grown much at all in the past several months. Other filtration includes a protein skimmer (AquaC Remora) that I run 24/7 ever since I started having the cyno outbreak and corals and macroalgaes not growing issues. I run a phosphate reactor filled with recommended dosage of Eco Phos (Ecosystem aquarium brand) media. Just two weeks ago I added an Eheim canister filter simply because I decided to treat the tank for a flatworm issue I've had since the tank started (about two years ago). I treated using Saliferts Flatworm exit and then started up the canister removing all the substrate from the canister and running only carbon pads, mechanical pads, and Chemipure. I left the canister on there simply cause I thought maybe one of the issues in my tank could be chemical warfare that needs to be remedied through activated carbon. I think that's all for filtration.I have done 5 gallon water changes since the tanks conception but decided when I started having a bit of a cyano issue to up the changes to 10 gallons per week. I use tropic Marin salt and actually just recently switched over to the Tropic Marin Bio Actif. I love there salts. Since the tank setup I never vacuumed the Sandbed because I read where many said micro organisms, nassarius snails, and hermit crabs will take care of the substrate. When the Cyano and tank problems started up though I started cleaning religiously every week up until last week when I decided to pretty much tear down the tank, remove the sand, and re-aqauscape using a pvc frame and cable ties.
For lighting I an using Orpheks PR 150. I run moon LEDs ever so often at night. Inhabitants receive about 9 hours of light a day.
Water motion is taken care of using one small hydra koralia, the main pump that runs my filter/sump/refugium, the canister filter outlet, and one Ecotech Vortech mp10 (absolutely incredibly awesome pump/wave maker).
Makeup water is obtained via an AirWaterIce typhoon 3 reef keeper RO/DI unit. I put 1/4 gallon in every night after lights go off and every morning before lights come on and use 1/2 teaspoon of kalkwasser per 1/4 gallon makeup. Made fresh right before I put it in.
The levels when I tested this week were:
Calcium- 390 ppm
dKH- 8
Magnesium- 1140ppm
Phosphate- 0-0.1
Nitrate- 0
pH -Heck if I could figure it out. The colors on my salifert pH tests always come out funky. My best guess is around 8.0 or so. : (
All tests are Salifert.
Tank inhabitants are: one Orange Firefish, one (mean as a snake) Orchid Dottyback, one Mandarin Dragonet, a bunch of Green star polyp that in currently trying to limit and cut back on, Xenia, three or four varieties of Zoas ( none of them have grown or even looked well in many many months.), an orange montipora, Birdsnest (was doing well but then almost died. Looks like it's trying to come back now), some variety of montipora that I'm not sure of (will post a pic), one frogspawn (has not grown one centimeter since I've owned it), one green leather ( has done equally terrible in last several months. No growth and not even coming out most days. Just looks slumped over and ruirnt. : ( ), a couple of mushroom anemones including a couple of ricordea. Ricordea has not grown or multiplied since I've had them (almost 2 years) but they're colorful and look healthy to me. Hmm I think that's got it other than some random Astrea and Nassarius Snails.
Good heavens SO sorry for the long post but you're all caught up on my tank now. I haven't had anybody to talk to about it so when the chance comes up I just go crazy! : ). I'll post some pics here in a while when the tank lights come on and everything's out. : )
