Reef tank on a tiny island

Well the new tank has finally arrived :) and the set up day will be the whole of my Sunday haha!

But can someone explain what the end section on the left of the sump is? I am thinking a top up bit but how does that work?

How exciting to have your system coming together! Remember that a sump is basically a separate glass box where you can put stuff that you don't want in your main display tank (DT) so you have flexibility with what you put where including using the small space to add water from an automatic top off (ATO). The small chamber on the left could also be used for the drain piping to flow into. This limits the turbulence in the rest of the sump and is a great place to put bags of activated carbon, Chemi-Pure, etc. (stuff that should be in high flow areas). The water then spills out of that small section into the rest of the sump. Sometimes a filter sock stand, filter media cup, or other mechanical filtration is put in this area so the water can flow over and down through the socks/media. The third section would potentially be for the skimmer/skimmer stand and then the final chamber for the return pump.

I would have liked to have seen the double baffle moved to the right so that you could have fit your skimmer into the second chamber, the return pump in the third chamber, and then have the last chamber available for a refugium, but no such luck.

I was able to find a few pictures that describe this approach. If you follow this link to the page "Aquarium Sumps: Everything You Need to Know" and then scroll down to the section entitled "Sump Layout Designs" you will find some related images. Good luck - we are cheering for you!

Excited to show you all the finished results of my big tank move yesterday. Its finally settled and the fish are happy :)

The aquarium is from Prime Aquariums in the UK, and the coral inserts I shipped over from America with InstantReef :D this time I have chosen a much deeper sand bed than I had before to give plenty of food for my starfish and sand sifting goby.

Over all I am super happy with the end result now to let it settle and get some more fish in there ;)

Great job on pulling it all together!

Now the tank has settled more and less cloudy really glad I made the move to a bigger tank.

So my newest tank addition is officially the most interesting fish I have ever had. The Scribbled Boxfish. He's always at the glass regardless of who feeds him to check you out. Anyone else had one of these fish before?

Love that artificial insert, tank looks great!!!

Looks nice! Best of luck to you! The only thing I se that could potentially become a problem is having a Sand Sifting Sea Star and Goby. They require a large surface area and an established tank with which to feed or they will more than likely parish.
