Reef Tank Ornaments

I am a noob in terms of Reefing and i wanted to ask why Reefers do not use Ornaments like statues or ships etc in their aquariums? Is that because the water chemistry could do something to them and make them release something toxic? It generally not advised to go that route?

Generally speaking, it’s just that they’re tacky.

Oh they do use ornaments. They’re just mounted to the insides of their aquarium stands.

What, a pirate ship with a treasure chest that periodically opens to reveal the gold inside a reef tank is tacky? Tell that to my GF... ;Woot!

New to reef tanks but I have kept planted tanks for 10 years now. They look tacky even freshwater tanks, especially planted tanks.

I think most of us who have the hobby of fish keeping agree that plastic or otherwise obviously fake deco is AWFUL!

I am firmly anti fake deco haha.

As lovely as the may appear in a freshwater tank, when we set up a saltwater tank we are trying to replicate a natural piece of the ocean. I've seen many reef documentaries and I have never seen a natural plastic bubbling ornaments. Now I have seen some saltwater tanks with these ornaments. Ultimately its the owner that is trying to replicate something pleasing to his/her eyes so they can decorate a tank however they envision it.
