Hello everyone, on Christmas I received a new camera as a gift. I usually just snap pics of my tanks on my phone, but using a camera will definitely up the quality of my shots... but the question is, how do I take the right shots? I have a moon light led and blue fluorescent in my tank that makes the corals hard to see in the camera... anything I should do about that? Also, I have heard I should get a macro lens, is this true? Sorry for asking so much, just don't know much about cameras lol. Oh btw, the camera is a sony h300. Thanks everyone

I don't know much about this camera. If it is digital dslr, there might be a setting to shoot pics in RAW format. I can explain more if it is. But it kinda looks like a point and shoot to me. And if that is the case, you'll have to try out the built in camera settings. If you have leds, this could be tricky unless you have dslr.

Does it have full control over f stop and shutter speed?

Back when I got a digital SLR I spent a lot of time looking at professional shots that would show whitebalance, aperture, flash, etc. Since then I've found a couple good youtube videos that help too. The time consuming thing for me was figuring out how to change all the settings they were referencing. Good luck and don't get discouraged.

Yeah, it's not that hard for a canon. I can explain it pretty briefly if that's the case. There's alot of info out there, but it probably boils down to can you white balance or not.

I have a canon 70d what would be the setting that I would want to shoot pictures of the tank. Dumb it down for example grab camera, turn it on, etc :D

Well, i like to select program/file mode as RAW image and on the camera use the av shooting mode. Set your fstop around 9-10, use a high iso setting. This is usually a pretty fast shutter speed under daylight lights. And the higher fstop keeps things in depth with focus. Works better for a macro lens, but should also work for standard.

Shooting in raw, i open my file in photoshop. Pick the eye dropper, click on somewhere that is as close to white as you can get. Then import the raw into a regular photoshop file. I use auto contrast color and tone, and then typically save the image for web. Shrink it to 20%, and your good to upload.

I will give it a try. Thank you

Looks like this color wise. This is with a lookdown tube.

My ora pearlberry next to my unknown i call juicy fruit

Juicy fruit is hard to white balance, i need to stick a plug near it or something

I would like to get a 60mm micro lens for close ups. That is going to come later. I will mess with the setting and photo shop late today.
