Hi all,

So it is roasting at the moment in my house, were going through a heatwave in the UK. I just wondered what temperature is the max your reef tank can hit before you start running into serious problems.

Also what temp to you run your tank at and how do you keep it cool during a heat wave? I am setting up a tank currently but work away a lot, this is issue has been playing on my mind.

Thanks

What do you normally keep your tank at, and what is it currently?
Fans across the surface can help. Some have resorted to putting frozen bottles of water in their sump to cool off a tank. Of course, they sell chillers specifically for this purpose.

If it is a recurring issue best to consider installing a chiller. Otherwise, a fan across the top to force evaporation which extracts heat from the water is the least you could do.

I live in Thailand so it's always hot... We use chiller or titanium coil (larger tank) to cool it down

Tank temp is typically between 77-79 (25-26c) degrees. 82 (27) is the warmest I’ve even had the tank and the livestock didn’t do well.
Couple of things you can try if you don’t have access to a chiller. Position a fan above the waters surface it’ll help reduce the temp and control evaporation.

Here are a few I’ve tried that you can add to the side of your tank. Tunze is nice because of the quality.

Tunze 7028.900 Aquawind Fan for Evaporative Cooling of Aquariums
JEBO F-60202 Aquarium Cooling System Fan

I run my tank at 77 degrees and use a small clip-on desktop fan directed at the water surface to cool it off. The fan is hooked up to my Inkbird temperature controller and kicks on when the temperature gets to be 78 degrees. The fan works really well, but I only have about 35 gallons of water volume to cool off. Larger systems will probably need a chiller.
