Reef2reef: you have a scammer problem

I have been looking all over this forum for people having similar experiences but so far have not found anyone. The first suspicious message I wrote off, but now it's two. R2R admins, you have bots or scammers sending PM's to people who post Wanted to Buy ads trying to get them to send text messages to suspicious phone numbers. The message has the same general feel to it. Apparently we have a number of widows on this forum who's dead husbands just happened to have XP8 bars.

It’s another epidemic- so many members of this forum deceased suddenly!

I remember running into this a couple years ago. Always a newer member, name with a couple numbers, and the same or very similar message. I reported them and one of the admins took care of it. They said it had been happening a lot at the time. Must be something that comes and goes as the scammer works their way through their list of targeted forums.

Wow this was a first for me. I expect this kind of nonsense on places like Facebook marketplace, but on a private forum like this? These scammers are really trying hard lol

I just had a message from a person offering me tangs and corals extremely cheap and shipped and takes Venmo only- Never replied

It happens everywhere and it's happening on forums in general. I know from my relationships with other forum owners. We have A LOT of spam deterrents in place but we can't stop it all. When these accounts get reported, it's an auto spam ban! It feels good too. So report away! We will also check into other ways to try and combat this.

I’ve had this type of message hit my inbox on a daily basis when I post a “Wanted to Buy” listing - it will typically continue on for a few days after the posting. It happens on just about any forum I have been apart of unfortunately. I do not respond to the scammer and immediately report it. The scammer account vanishes from R2R as quickly as it came when you report it.

I cant complain as its one in near 11 years. Previous was about 9 years ago.
