I am putting together a 90 gallon mixed reef and it has a 4 bulb t-5 retro kit in the canopy, and I was going to use a 48" 50/50 reef brite led in the middle of the canopy

With the 4 t-5 bulbs and the 48" led, I should be good for both growth and looks correct?

A 4 bulb t5 should already be enough PAR, so you are good there.

As for the look, that's a matter of personal choice and which t5 bulbs you use and how you adjust the leds.

I found this helpful for color bulb choices and if your looking for the shimmer of led I think one is enough with 4 bulbs to give the effect

I would say it depends on the corals you'll be growing. If you're looking to keep acros, you'll probably want 6 T5 bulbs. I assume your footprint is 18" front to back? If LPS/Softies, I think that's fine.

You are fine. I have a 4 bulb retrofit T-5 with 1 Reefbrite xho. With my canopy hung 2 feet above the tank I still get 150 - 175 PAR on the hottim glass with an apogee 500series. My tank is 4' x 2' x 18". If your lights are 2 feet closer to the surface though it will more than make up for the disparity in tank depth.
