So i am starting fresh, it has been a few years since i had a tank, but i had a FOWLR for a few years before. I cut a lot of corners with that and dealt with a lot of problems because of it. This time i want to do it right, from the start. And i want to do mostly inverts and corals with a few fish.

I have done a bit of research, and i just want some other peoples opinions on part selection, and order of operations.

First step.
Tank - Red Sea Reefer 170
Return Pump - Octo Varios-2
Heater - Finnex Digital (until i set up a apex and then it will be the backup) 150w
Salt - Red Sea coral pro
RO/DI - BRS 4 stage
Refractometer - BRS
And glue and epoxy for setting up the rock. Brs glue and aquastik epoxy sound good?

Second Step.
Rock - 40lbs from apurplereef, Live rock caused way to many issues for me before.
Sand - also from apurplereef, not sure on amount yet, recommendations? thinking thick for a goby/pistol pair.

At this point i plan to put the tank together and set up the rock, add the salt water, and begin the cycle with red sea reef mature pro kit. Which will give me some time to save up for the next step.

Third step.
Protein skimmer - octo 110sss, was thinking regal 150 but i think it might be too big.
Light - ecotech radion xr30g4pro. is this overkill? should i just go with a xr15?
Powerhead - ecotech vortech 10wqd
Reeflink to control light and powerhead for a few months until i can afford the apex setup.

Also, any recommendations on test kits? I was thinking the red sea stuff looked pretty good, but i have never used it.

After that i will probably try a macroalgea reactor, and a carbon/gfo reactor. And run everything with a apex.
