I just recently added the CUC and will be starting to stock a separate QT tank in the next 2 weeks or so. My past tanks have all been larger - including our current 90G DT - so wanted to get some advice on the following initial list I put together for stocking. I realize this may be a bit overstocked for a 34G Display (43 Total Gallons including Sump) but figured i would start large then whittle down ;)

  • Helfrichi Firefish
  • Midas Blenny
  • 1 or 2 Clowns (If I went with 1 it would probably be a Maroon variety or if 2 a bonded pair of maybe Gladiators)
  • Citron Clown Goby
  • Pink-Streaked Wrasse
  • Red Mandarin
On the coral front eventually I was thinking of a Nem for the clown(s) and mostly an LPS dominant tank outside of that.

Thanks!

Even as a single clown, a maroon can be a bit too much of an aggressive personality for a 34g.

A 34 is also going to struggle to produce enough pods to support a mandarin, couple that with tne fact that a pink streak wrasse will also pick at pods, it will be difficult to get a mandarin thriving.

Good to know on both fronts. In regard to the mandarin, our plan was already to supply pod populations from AlgaeBarn or others to supplement. I wasn't aware that the wrasse also would eat those, so that's great info. I'd say of the list the mandarin is probably the most "must have" of them even if we have to make special arrangements in regard to the pod population.

A mandarin consumes the equivalent of pods that come in those pod culture in a day, they eat constantly.

Creating pod piles throughout the tank and growing chaetomorpha in the sump will help.

I knew mandarins ate a lot of pods but they go through an entire package in a day?:eek:

I was looking at something like Algae Barn's Poseidon Feast and their smallest container has 3000+ pods in it. My thought - which I didn't research to date FYI - was that I'd supplement one of those maybe once a month or two. Will that not be sufficient? In terms of the chaeto, I'm planning on getting some for my sump before we start adding anything.

A full grown mandarin can eat anywhere between 1,000-3,000 pods a day. An established tank, pod piles, chaeto, and regular pod supplementation can help in a tank that size, but is by no means easy.

Yikes, good to know and appreciate the info!
