Hello, I am new to the hobby. I have bought used Reefer170. Currently deciding if I should change the ATO into refugium or just buy fluid filter? Thinking about future problems I know.. however would like to know how other hobbyists solvr their phosphate problems with equipment :) please give me your opinions

Here is a sump tour of my reefer 170!
Fellow 170 Reefer. Do you turn that heater off 20-30 minutes before you turn the tank off. That compartment drains when the tank is shut off.

I put baffles into the sump on my 170 and have a skimmer and refugium section.

it works great, and wasn’t too hard to do either. It cost about $90 for the laser cut parts from pokono, some gel super glue & JB waterweld to fill the gaps.

It does? I turned my return pump off and water still remains in the chamber
Yes, 4-5 inches drain. If your heater isn’t buried in there towards the bottom, I’d be careful.

i already know that, water always drains down to the top of the full siphon drain leaving plenty of water still in the chamber. I verified this by checking and see how much water was left

I turned the ATO revisor into an algae scrubber. I actually have to dose phosphates to keep detectable. First pic doesn’t show the drain but I just drilled the bottom and added a bulkhead. Added a piece of pvc to both top and bottom of bulkhead. The bottom goes below the water line of the sump and the piece of pvc on the top keeps water level in ATS about an inch and half high which allows for a spot for pods.

Good idea.

I have a Santa Monica Drop 2, very small fits in front of sock. Definite reduction in algae’s of DT which is pretty clean. No red light showing through, very minimal wattage to run.

Update to above, no longer using SM Scrubber. Now using Skimz Zeolite auto reactor and a few KZ products. No phosphate problem.
