I have had a freshwater tank many years. Really digging the nano reef tanks.
I have decided to get the Fluval 13.5 tank instead of the Biocube. What are your thoughts on this? Looking for some help...

Besides the tank what do you recommend I get (other equipment just things ill need)

Thank you for the help!

I think its fine. Decide on what you want to have (livestock), equipment choice is dependant on that.
I would say start with a power head (hydor pico evolution), media basket (chemipure blue), and a better light (at least orbit marine). A decent heater (temperature controller will be nice in the long run). This should be good enough for most softies/lps setup.
If you plan to grow sps, get coule of kessil A80 or AI prime or kessil a150. The long shape of this aquarium makes it harder to lit well with prime or kessil style pucks. Nanobox is good too.
best of luck

The fluval is really nice for a nano. Upgraded the light with a current marine led, just white and blues, nothing fancy. Added a small hydor power head for added flow, no skimmer or heater. Tank stays at 75-76 degrees. Great growth with montis, birdsnest, bubbletips, LPS.

Thank you,

Is there a website I should become friends with or just the local fish store. Not too many here in Kentucky.

I am pretty excited to get this going.

What do you do for water? Just buy it or should I make it?

Thank you,

Is there a website I should become friends with or just the local fish store. Not too many here in Kentucky.

There are a few places. What part of Kentucky are you in? CJ's Aquarium (YouTube person) is in Louisville and has a few good shops in the area. Anyway, my personal favorite is Bulk Reef Supply. There's also Marine Depot, Saltwater Aquariums, Dr. Foster & Smith, etc. Fluval seems like they've really cut into the saltwater market over the last 6 months or so. I'm still partial to Innovative Marine, but Fluval makes a good product. Something people always mention to beginner saltwater folks is that the bigger tank you can go with the better. Maybe look into getting a used tank off Craigslist, LetGo, OfferUp, Facebook, etc.

I'd recommend you start here to find out everything you need to start an aquarium:

This site is also a great resource to get started. As for water, you can either:

A: Use tap water, treat it with Seachem Prime and mix in your salt - You'll get crucified on here if you say you're using it, but I did it for 8 months with no problems
B: Purchase a RODI filter - Somewhere between $100-150.
C: Purchase RODI water from a local fish store ($0.50-$1.00 per gallon) and mix in your own salt
D: Purchase premixed saltwater from your local fish store ($1.00-$2.00 per gallon)

Don't forget that the water evaporates and leaves the salt behind, raising your salinity. So you'll need extra RODI on hand to add every day to keep the salinity at the same level.

Make it. Get an ro buddie, for 70$ it will run for a year. You will save a lot as well as have emergency supply. Use reef crystal from instant ocean as salt
