Reeffarmers Ice Fire Echinata vs Aussie wild

Yeah, they're very different corals. Though I'm sure the wild ones vary... The wild frag I had never grew much, had decent color but nothing special, cream to brown with blue tips. I recently got rid of it to make room for something more interesting. The tyree version however is something special IMO, gorgeous blue tips, green body, and very delicate branches.

For people who care about lineage and/or names they will look differently, for people who care less they will look exactly the same lol

I've not had luck with either, I have tried the Reeffarmers twice and wild Aussie 4 times....I can grow deepwaters like a pro but the A. Echinata has never done well for me.

Ha! I generally agree with that statement--I would say my experience is the original ice fire (aqua scene) is a good grower for me, is hardy and has spectacular colors in my tank. I have bought wild aussie's twice and have not had good growth or coloration. Perhaps they are the same species, with the former perhaps benefitting from its aqua cultured lineage..

I agree, you can easily find the same acro from the wild now. But the lineage does help because it should be acclimated to tank conditions and you don't have to go through the stages of change and aclimation that wilds normally do. I am sure there are differences in the wilds depending on where they are collected and so on but in the end I bet its not hard to find one that looks the same.

That's what I was thinking. Is the RF version just a wild Aussie that's been in captivity longer or actually a better strain?

I guess I better get a frag of both! :)

Absolutely agree with that ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I've had luck with wild aussie but the percentage is low and after a year they look similar.

I've got the Ice Fire in different tanks, same water but different lights and they look like different corals,,same body but different color.

That coral was in the hobby long before Aussie opened its waters for hobby collection. I totally disagree with the people in here that think they're the same. I haven't been able to get a wild frag to look like the original. I also think that many of the wild colonies are A. speciosa and not A. echinata.

Here's a couple of them with lineage. Someone show me something captive grown from a frag of wild that looks like these...
