Hi Guys

So testing Nitrates using green hand held hanner checker its the URL in ppb.

I have a reading of 6ppb but want to find out if correct that the reading in ppm is 0.019.

Using calculations

6 x 3.29 = 19.74 ÷ 1000 = 0.019

Sorry is this under 1ppm or above

6 ppb converts to 0.006 ppm. I think you are also converting from Nitrite-N to Nitrite ion at the same time. The 3.29 is the factor for doing that.

The reality is that nitrite is non-toxic to marine fish at any level that you will find through natural sources. Even spiking seawater with extra nitrite shows no real toxicity in seawater fishes. In the absence of salt ions though, nitrite is deadly. Freshwater fish are often killed by as little as 0.25 ppm.

Sorry it really didn't answer my question

Sorry - can you rephrase your question? Perhaps I misunderstood it. 6 ppb of nitrite-N is equal to 0.006 ppm nitrite-N. That in turn is equal to 0.020 ppm Nitrite ion, which is well below 1 ppm.

That level is not harmful in marine aquariums, it is essentially zero. There is always some transient amount of nitrite in aquarium water, just before the autotrophs break it down to nitrate.

Also, you should run the same test on some RODI, as 6 ppb may be at the detection limit for that Hanna test. My Hach spectrophotometer will read 3 ppb nitrite-N in a sample that I know is zero.

Hi Jay

That's perfect wanted to check that I was intact below 1ppm of nitrites. Phosphate is 0.25ppm
But I've heard that aquarium should have some nitrates for corals to do well.
