reefmat is using a crazy amount of roll
I've opened the flow yesterday because the tank was noisy, return pump is on max, how can I make it use less?

How long have you had the reefmat ? New ones tend to go through more roll for a bit !
How many gph is the return pushing??

1500 gph
i've had it for 2 weeks, first day it used about 180inches, but i done it after a 505 waterchange and messing up the sand bed, but 400 inches is just crazy it's just used a roll in a few days i haven't done anything in the tank and haven't been feeding any extra

I'd turn the return pump down . . .
more than likely exceeding the gph for the reefmat . How big is the tank and is it the red sea 1200??

Well you are on the upper range for the flow with the 500 maybe that is the reason . Maybe Reduce the pump speed or raise the filter a little see if that helps .

I think your reefmat is likely too deep as far sump water level is concerned along with possibly the underbasket being too crammed with fine media if it's using that much paper unless your water is extremely dirty

I use 2 1200s on my 470gal thats fed with both a vectra l2 and m2 with high bioload without use anywhere near yours

reefmat 500, red sea 425 XL ( 110 gal volume)
I put the 500 on my max S500, I think that system is about 130g. Now I say this but it was the first roll. I went through a bunch the first month, but I also thought it was slightly undersized for the tank. The rating is 130 so I guess I was technically right over it (132). But this weekend I put the 1200 on it and it’s going to last a hot minute. Now, the 500 on the 250 will be just as nice, size to tank wise. When looking at my graph, don’t judge me by the spike this weekend on the 250, lol. “Somehow” chaeto got inside my Reefmat and it was happy about that and used a bunch of fleece to digest it… whooopsie, you can dual purpose a Reefmat :)

Yeah most likely the mat cannot handle that much flow through it. On my 525, I have my return pump at around 300gph and I still think I should lower it a bit more. Sump turnover rate is not as important as display turnover from your wavemakers IMO, as long as you can get at least 1x-2x total water volume. Also it will use a bunch if your water is dirty, or you're dosing something like nopox. I'm using 70 inches on average in my heavily stocked and fed 525. It was worse when I have dosing alot of nopox the weeks before, probably about 90-100 inches a day. I've toned down the dosing this week, and have seen a 30 inch difference in daily use.

The Reefmat advances the fleece whenever the water level inside the body of the unit reaches high enough to trigger the sensor. Check the water level the Reefmat is sitting in. Raise it up if possible. Also, to increase the flow through the unit, do not use the media basket which can be attached at the bottom.
