Hi. I have a RS reefer 525xl. 5ftx2ftx2ft 139 gallons. Im currently using 2 maxspect f350x gyre. One of them having issues and im getting tired of the problems they've been causing. I wanna change out my flow pumps. What do you guys suggest? Should i go with 2 reefwaves and which models. Or should i go with mp40 and how many? Placement for these pumps? Attached is a pic of how my tank looks. Please help anyway you can. Any suggestions or input is appreciated thanks.

I am a fan of the eco tech pumps. Super easy to clean, no wires in the tank, good programmability. From what I heard and read, the gyre style pumps are annoying to clean and service.

I have a 2 gyres xf350 and 2 MP40s. I would recommend the MP40s with out a doubt. the gyres are a pita to clean, I actually took them off the tank cause i was always dreading cleaning them. they work.... for a week or 2 and then you need to clean them. While MP40s have been in the tank for 4 months now, i might have to clean them at 6 months cause they are getting covered by coraline too much. just imhe

I like the MP40’s I have, it’s nice not having the wires in the tank. They are also easy to clean and have a bunch of nice modes. I’d do two and place one on each side.

You could probably also get away with 2 MP10’s for that size tank since it’s a mixed reef, depending on how thick your glass is. MP10 can only go up to .375”.

I wouldnt do a gyre if you dont like the maxspect, that is the highest end for gyres as it is, what were you not liking about the pump though?

Yea i dont think the mp10 wouldnt work. I glass is too thick for them.

The maintenance for one. I end up having to clean them so often. And no after i took one of them apart. You can hear it rev up everytime its pushing water. Also controlling the flow is hard cuz the controllers go by increments of 10%

I don’t like gyres at all due to maintenance and noise. I never had any problems with MP40s as they are very easy to clean, quiet, no heat and wires in the tank, and it’s not difficult to program. I’m sure you will like them more than maxspect gyres!

So majority votes on mp40s. Thats sounds good to me. So how many should i put in the tank and the placement of them? I have some torches in the middle of the tank, do i need to move them?

Different alternative for vortechs mp40s are the tunze 6155, just a super reliable pump

I got four Nero 5s in my 525. Love em.

Been running a couple of RS Reefwave 25s for about 9 months now. I clean them about every 3 months. I can’t speak in Maxspect gyres but RS gyres are really easy to clean. Not a fan of their App, but no issues with the machinery. My 2

I have only used eco techs mp40s

and if I were to have one break I would immediately go and buy another one they are worth every dollar. No wires they look beautiful in the tank

easy to clean and you can just change out the wet side for a clean one and you can clean the dirty one when you have time

I have 2 on opposite ends of a 210 Gallon. there are torches in the middle. I run mine at 40% reef crest. Seems to be fine.

I really don't think I could pay $399 for a MP40, just on principle. As much as I hate cords, and I have three MP40s, I'd be favoring the Reefwave. Two of my MP40s are old and I've replaced the bearings, the third I got on sale, so I haven't paid near the current going price.

I have been running a pair of reefwave45s and they absolutely produce a better flow than my mp40s did. The comments about difficulty with maintenance don't seem to be coming from folks that have actually ran a reefwave. Either choice is more than adequate.
