Hey all,
I’ve used the attached refractometer (bought a few) for years and years. Tonight I finally had an “uh oh” moment.
In those 5 or so years, never had an issue with wonky readings. Always use 35 cal fluid. Tonight when doing a water change, 1.025, normal reading. An hour later I go to check the tank and it’s 1.020. Corals bunching up and acting funny. Check my cal solution again and it’s reading 37 (on 35). Rinse and repeat for the last 2 hours. Thoroughly irritating corals. Went to check it again before I leave it be and it’s 1.027 with cal solution being 38. Corals aren’t doing anything weird anymore so I’m leaving it be until I can get another refractometer.
Note I used two separate cal solutions: one at 1.025 and one at 35.
What on earth is going on?! Has anyone heard of refractometers all of a sudden stop calibrating or malfunctioning like this? It’s only 6 months old.
