Refractometer or hydrometer

Which is better or does it matter? aren't they both basically for the same things, just salinity vs. sp?

Refractometer is more precise and dependable after you calibrate it from my understanding

+1 Also might add that Redsea has developed one made for testing salt water.

I don't disagree at all, however you can maintain a very successful reef with a hydrometer as I have been doing it for about 15 years and I serviced tanks for years using a hydrometer.

You can definitely use both, I think you'll be happier in the long run with a refractometer.

Refractometer is unafected by bubbles or water currrent. BUT! When the water evaporates from the little pipette that you use to transfer water to the glass, it leaves salt behind which can contaminate your sample. Be sure to rinse it off well.

I would definitely go with the Red Sea refractometer, it was developed to read marine water vs traditional refractometers that are designed to read a brine solution.
