Refractometer, what to believe.

Id suggest making randys refractometer calibration solution. Its easy to do.
 
Agree with the two comments above, there is only one way to really know for sure, make your own solution. Some of the store bought calibration fluids can also be off but if you carefully prepare your own you will know for certain what is going on.
 
There are three different ways of checking the salinity that requires different test solutions. You can measure:
1. Gravitivity with a hydrometer. 3,714 % NaCl corresponds to 3,5% sea water
2. Light refraction with a refractometer. 3,65% NaCl corresponds to 3,5% sea water.
3. Electrical conductivity. 3,29% NaCl corresponds to 3,5% sea water.

Naturally a controlled sample of sea water fits all meters.
I dont know but maybe the American Pinpoint solution is made for electrical conductivity meters only.
