so need advice reading my refractometer. How is the best way to hold the device? If I hold it level I can get a reading, however if I tilt up towards the light the reading increases maybe 2ppt? Is this normal? I calibrate with RODI and I know when holding flat is the true reading but wanted to see if anyone else has this??

Make sure there aren't any air bubbles between the lense and cover.

Also I'd recommend calibrating with 35ppt (or 3.5%) calibrating liquid over rodi. From what I can tell, the span of the range isn't very accurate. You have a more accurate instrument adjusting it to your target value than to zero.

I take mine outside and hold it parallel to the ground. There is no need to point it at a light.
