I am considering buying a Refractometer and was wondering if they are worth it or not and if anyone has any recommendations. im looking for something that is going to last for a long time with good results. Thank you for your help!

Snag one from BRS I love having my Apex but lets be honest sensors can fail and do. I always keep a refractometer around for when I make new water. I have the self lit one and I really like It easy to read just make sure you get the proper calibration fluid for it don't use R/O water as it will throw it off
Yes they are worth the cost.Especially if you decide to own multiple aquariums. I don't know the bad name of mine though.So I could not make any specific recommendations.
Curious, what are you currently using to measure salinity?
Btw I have the Red Sea refractometer just because it was the one my local fish store had when I needed one. Pretty sure cheaper ones work just as well but I’ve heard temp compensation is a feature that you might want. I’m no expert though

I have two, one for making beer and the other for my reef tank which I got from BRS. I have the calibration fluid but once I get it dialed in, it has been acturate everytime I test it with the calibration fluid.

There is no replacement for a refractometer. It is a must have IMO. There are other things that will measure salinity but they are all double checked against the tried and true refractometer.

I like my refractometer. I get a good feeling when checking salinity with an instrument that I have checked for accuracy and adjusted to a calibration standard. A long time ago, I almost killed a tank and definitely set it way back by trusting a swing-arm hydrometer. Lesson learned... thus the refractometer.
