Refugium and Biopellet Reactor

I currently have a refugium and biopellet reactor. My refugium never did well, still have had problems with nitrates. Started biopellets nitrates started coming down. Should I just get rid of the refugium or run both?

In terms of effectiveness in removing nitrates, with a skimmer being number one, I believe a refugium w/macro algae may be number two.

If you don't need to get rid of the refugium, and it's not contributing any negative attributes, I'd suggest leaving it. Perhaps, with the nitrates dropping now, experiment and change things up in it, like different varieties of macro, rubble, flow or a detrivore kit.

Skimmers do NOT remove Nitrates. They remove Particulate and Organic matter before they can be broken down into Nitrate. A Skimmer is really only another form of Mechanical Filtration but the big difference is what is removed is removed from the water column.

Exactly. I should have been more specific. Thanks for clarifying. Number one as a preventative measure against nitrates.

I would rum the refuguim with marine pure you will def see s difference in on how well it functions ans maybe add a GFO reactor have you check THE phos ?
